The History of The Devon Rex Cat

In 1960, The Devon Rex cats came about from One Woman named Beryl Cox in Devonshire, England. This small pixie looking cat with a thin, wavy, tight coat of fur was found abandoned near a tin mine. This one Tom Cat mated another cat and she was able to take one of those kittens in. That cat is named Kirlee and he became the founding father to the amazing Devon Rex Cat Breed. Through several more matings Beryl was able to determine that the Devon Rex coat was not the same as the Cornish Rex coat found 10 years earlier. They concluded that the Devon Rex wavy haired gene was a seperate one from Cornish Rex. Kirlee (founding father Devon) created many children and they safely were able to make a breed after a years of in breeding. Kirlee Lived a very long, productive life until he was killed in a road accident in 1970.

Devons have many characteristics and amazing personalities. They are the pixie cat of the cat world for their Elfish look to them and smaller stature. They are michievious, playful, very social, very extremely loving, intelligent, pet friendly, vocal with the people they love, and they love to hang out on your shoulder. We call them parrot cats when they don’t leave your shoulder. This breed is definetely one of a kind and truly awesome. They are better with their michievious side when there is another cat in the home for them to play with. Devon Rex cats are also one of the smallest cats in the world. A grown female Devon will only grow to be 5 to 6lbs. A grown male Devon can grow a tad bigger but mostly they stay between 6 to 7lbs. Their bodies are very muscular, and short to the ground. They have beautiful plush like coats of fur resembling teddy bears.
